"Christianity in Egypt: Literary Production and Intellectual Trends" collects papers offered to Tito Orlandi, in order to celebrate his long and fruitful academic and scientific life. Scholars of Coptic Egypt, who, in various ways, have interacted with him, offer a contribution on Christian Egypt and Coptic literary production. This volume has the ambition to be in line with Tito Orlandi's diverse efforts and includes the publication of partially or totally inedited texts, such as the new Ethiopic version of Traditio apostolica (A. Bausi), or the Allocutio ad monachos attributed to Athanasius (A. Boud'hors), the reconstruction of Coptic codices and texts with an analysis of related cultural and linguistic problems (B. Layton, E. Lucchesi, A. Suciu – E. Thomassen, S. Torallas-Tovar); considerations about the Coptic manuscript tradition (P. Buzi), the codicological method (S. Emmel), Coptic literature in relation with Greek patristic literature and Greek rhetoric (S. Voicu, M. Sheridan), as well as the presentation of new research studies in hagiography (H. Behlmer, D. Johnson) and liturgy in its connection with magic and apocryphal literature (J. van der Vliet). Some essays are tied to Tito Orlandi's traditional interest in Coptic history and historiography (Ph. Blaudeau, A. Camplani, J. den Heijer – P. Pilette, M. Simonetti, E. Wipszycka), others, on the base of his critical investigations and editorial activity on monastic and theological texts, deal with monastic exegesis and spirituality (Th. Baumeister, D. Bumazhnov, J.E. Goehring, J. Timbie) and Alexandrian hermeneutics and theology (E. Prinzivalli), while the contributions on Gnosticism are connected to his attention to Gnostic texts (C. Gianotto, G. Lettieri, J.D. Turner). At the end are to be mentioned the essays offered by eminent Egyptologists on Coptic papyri (S. Donadoni) classical Egyptology (S. Pernigotti), and archaeology (E. Bresciani).

An intensive summer institute in papyrology, jointly sponsored by the Departments of Classics of the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will be held on the campus of the University of Chicago in the summer of 2012. The program is aimed at advanced graduate students and junior faculty in Classics and associated fields, including history, Egyptology, classical and Near Eastern archaeology, history of religions, and biblical studies. The general theme of the 2012 papyrological institute is “Religion, Magic, and Early Christianity in the Papyri.” The primary materials will consist of Greek literary and documentary papyri from Roman and early byzantine Egypt on loan from the University of Michigan collection.

The 2012 institute is the seventh in a series of intensive summer programs held under the aegis of the American Society of Papyrologists. In keeping with the goals of previous years, the institute aims to provide participating scholars with direct experience of the papyri through close reading of individual texts, and with knowledge of the field of papyrology in general, so that they may employ this knowledge effectively in conducting their own future research and teaching.

The summer institute will offer a combination of lectures and first-hand experience working with original textual materials. Students are expected to participate actively in all of the institute’s programs and activities; a full-time commitment is required while the institute is in session. Mornings will be dedicated to introductory lectures by the principal instructors, Professor James G. Keenan (Loyola University of Chicago), Director, and Professors David Martinez (University of Chicago), Maryline Parca (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and Peter van Minnen (University of Cincinnati). Afternoons will be devoted to advanced coursework, to workshops on select papyri, and to individual research. A series of guest lectures on topics related to the theme of the seminar will supplement the core presentations.

Admission to the summer papyrological institute is by application only, and approximately ten scholars will be selected to participate. Although previous experience with papyrology is not required, a high degree of competence in ancient Greek is essential. Participation in the institute is free of charge (no tuition) and not for credit. We anticipate offering modest grants for travel and/or living expenses, but applicants are expected to seek financial support from their home institutions, and from other sources, to facilitate their participation. The American Society of Papyrologists will deliver a certificate of participation to those completing the institute. Neither grades nor transcripts will be issued.

Application procedure: The application consists of the completed application form (http://www.papyrology.org), a curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation. All materials must be received by March 1, 2012 in order to be given full consideration. Notification of decisions will be issued in late March.

President of the Archaeological Institute of America, professor at the University of Michigan from 1889 to 1927, and president of the American Philological Association, Francis Kelsey was crucially involved in the founding or growth of major educational institutions. This panel aims to explore aspects of religion in Greco-Roman Egypt that are best understood by studying the Greek and Demotic documents together, demonstrating the importance of employing this inclusive approach to various aspects of post-Pharaonic Egyptian culture and history. Though focusing on religion, the papers will touch on other sub-fields -- including Hellenistic and Roman history, historiography, the ancient novel, epistolography, ethnicity and bilingualism, and onomastics -- that likewise are illuminated by some of the 15000 edited Demotic texts. Additionally, the panel will showcase certain new methodologies and technical applications that have uses beyond Demotic studies.

This panel presents a challenging mixture of papers concerning socio-economic and cultural issues. The first paper represents the work of a team that has found a large amount of papyri that belong to a well- known archive. The second paper sheds some light on the use of slave labor in skilled trades in late antiquity. The following concerns horoscopes designated as “deluxe” that so far have attracted little attention. From there the panel moves to handbooks for interpreting dreams and to two late papyri with interlinear musical notations that appear to be directly related to the origin of Byzantine musical notation.

27th INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF PAPYROLOGY

On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are pleased to invite you to take part in the 27th International Congress of Papyrology in 2013 in Warsaw, Poland. The Congress is organised under the patronage and in close cooperation with the International Association of Papyrologists.

The Polish capital hosted scholars interested in papyrology, history of Graeco‐Roman Egypt, and ancient laws during the 10th International Congress of Papyrology already over a half a century ago, in 1961. Bringing this event again to Poland’s capital shows the strength and vitality of the Warsaw papyrological milieu centred around The Journal of Juristic Papyrology.

Venue

The Congress will be held between Monday, 29 July, and Saturday, 3 August 2013. All sessions will take place in the Con Centre at the Collegium Novum, the old Library of the University of Warsaw located at the heart of the main University Campus at 26‐28, Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. The campus is found in the very centre of Warsaw, near its historical quarter, and it can be accessed easily by bus. The venue boasts modern auditoria and conference rooms fully equipped with audio‐visual facilities. At the disposal of the Congress participants will be 8 conference rooms seating up to 50 persons (convertible into 4 rooms seating 100 persons), as well as a spacious auditorium for up to 300 persons.

Accommodation

The Congress venue is located in the neighbourhood of several hotels representing a selection of standards. The accommodation offer with special rates for Congress participants will be posted on the website and included in the second circular.

Sessions

Five days of sessions will be scheduled. The sixth day will be reserved for the General Assembly of the AIP devoted to obituaries and a general discussion of current problems in our discipline.

The papers will be presented in one of the following languages: English, French, German, and Italian.

The sessions will be divided into two categories:

1) Plenary sessions, held in the morning, with papers read by invited scholars and devoted to the presentation of the results of recent work in the main fields of papyrology.

2) Parallel sessions held in the afternoon, with papers grouped according to subject matter. Two types of presentations will be accepted:

Papers (20 minutes)
Short papers (10 minutes)
Posters will be exhibited in addition to the sessions.
The Participants are required to submit abstracts (max. 200 words) of papers and poster presentations by e‐mail to papyrocongress2013@uw.edu.pl.

Social events
The city of Warsaw and the surrounding areas have numerous interesting places to visit, and the cultural offer of the Polish capital is extremely rich. The organizing committee will arrange several attractive tours open for participants and accompanying persons to be taken place in the days immediately following the Congress. Summary:
This book is the first comprehensive study of the lunar Macedonian calendar in two decades. The mechanics of the calendar are examined in detail, and a new approach for reconstructing the sequence of intercalary months and years is proposed which, for the first time, permits a consistent interpretation of the papyrological data of the middle Ptolemaic period. It is shown that in c. 265 BC Ptolemy II deliberately set in motion a process to realign the calendar over an extended period, which ended early in the reign of Ptolemy IV. The results have implications for the origins of the financial year, the date of the Ptolemaieia, and the history of the Canopic reform of the Egyptian calendar, among other topics. Appendices consider the nature of Macedonian intercalation and the New Year outside Egypt.

The study is of interest to students of ancient calendars, Ptolemaic chronology, and Hellenistic history.

Amb ocasió del X Aniversari de l’Estudi i Publicació del Fons Papirològic Roca-Puig, l’equip de filòlegs del Consell Superior d’Investigacions Científiques (CSIC) ha volgut oferir al responsable de la col·lecció en nom de la Comunitat benedictina de Montserrat un conjunt d’estudis filològics sota el nom de “Palabras bien dichas”.

El diumenge dia 27 de novembre va tenir lloc a la Sala de Romeries l’entrega del mencionat llibre amb l’assistència dels autors i la presència del P. Abad i del P. Prior, així com d’altres monjos de la Comunitat.

L’acte expressa la vitalitat i l’impuls per a continuar en l’estudi i la publicació dels textos manuscrits existents en hebreu, àrab i siríac; i sobretot dels papirs encara no editats.

Tot ha estat gràcies a que a les qualitats intel·lectuals, se’ls ha afegit el valor humà de la comprensió mútua i de la profunda amistat.

More Than Men, Less Than Gods is conceived as a demonstration project, with the goal of opening new perspectives in the study of Graeco-Roman ruler worship. A principal emphasis is placed on the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach to the subject. The present volume points to some possible forerunners to Hellenistic royal cult and emperor worship, or at least to the concept of the divine king, to supplement the well-studied roots of ruler worship in the cultic life of the Greek polis and in pharaonic Egypt. More than Men... aspires to contribute to the debate relative to divine kingship, royal cult and emperor worship by opening new perspectives or reopening old ones. The focus is in eliciting some audacious and innovative approaches to such a complex phenomenon. All questions are not raised and certainly most of them are not answered here. In abandoning the sterile opposition between “political” and “religious,” the volume’s perspective transcends established notions conditioned by the Judeo-Christian model of western societies and scholarship, to consider the problem under different perspectives: there is no need to oppose “Greek” vs. “oriental,” “rational” vs. “emotional” to understand the birth of the phenomenon.
The diversity of approaches draws attention to the variety of sources that provide evidence relating to ruler worship, or that can enhance our understanding of the broader phenomenon of the divinization of powerful men. These include myth and historical accounts preserved by ancient authors; dedicatory inscriptions; clay tablets; papyri; architectural decoration and other archaeological remains; statuary, cameos, gems and various minor arts; seal impressions; and coins.

(1) By now you will have noticed that we have rolled out the new search interface. This is an entirely new way of doing search and will take some getting used to.

Go to http://papyri.info/search . The search screen is divided into two parts. Search results appear on the right and search filters appear on the left.
The primary difference between the old and the new is that rather than coming up with a single search query that aims to give you exactly what you want, it is now possible to begin with a more open-ended search and successively narrow and expand it until you reach a desired end.

So, let's say your class is interested in literacy. Run an initial search for #αγραμματ: enter #αγραμματ in the search box or select "Convert from betacode as you type" and enter #agrammat (by the way, this is a good option if you want to run searches from your smartphone, which probably does not have Unicode Greek); click 'Search'. This will give you words beginning with αγραμματ (# indicates a boundary; you will not find διαγρραμματ). You get 446 hits--too many to show your class.

You select (toward the bottom) "Show only records with images from:" / "Papyri.info" and click 'Go'. This will narrow your found set down to the 16 texts that contain a word beginning with αγραμματ and are known (via APIS) to Papyri.info.

But there must be more: HGV knows about a great many links to other sites (external to papyri.info). So, you select "Other sites" and 'Go'. Now you have 221 records for which some digital image is known, whether via APIS or HGV.

Add "Print publications" and you will see that papyri.info knows of a total of 337 texts that have *some* image associated with them, whether digital or print.

Your class is working on texts from the first 2 centuries CE. So, you set "Date on or after" at "1 CE" and "Date on or before" to "200 CE" and click Go. That's 45 hits.

The classroom where you are teaching has digital projection, but no access to books. So, you *remove* the "Print images exist" filter by clicking it away from the top of the right side of your screen. That's 28 hits; you can actually look at several of these in class.

Abstract
Since Fall 2005, a team at the Experiential Technology Center of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and archaeologists from the UCLA and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) expedition to Fayum have been creating a Virtual Reality model of the ancient town of Karanis. The model has multiple purposes, perhaps the most innovative being its future use as a management tool for the archaeological site. The model will aide in monitoring the decay of the town since the early 20th century, and in reconstructing the buildings, but it will also be used to study aspects of routing and the use of space, as well as a way of explaining architecture, principles of stratigraphy, and life in the ancient town to students. These seemingly disparate aspects of the VR model all aid the compilation of a site management plan for Karanis. This short paper presents a work in progress, envisioning the full potential that 3D technology implies.

This volume presents ten contributions by various authors on different aspects of the ‘Villa of the Papyri’ at Herculaneum, including investigation of the villa itself and of objects recovered from it. The first two chapters focus on new research (including the first open air excavations) conducted on the villa between the mid 1980s and 2009. Next follow two chapters on the wall paintings and the sculptural collection; two more chapters deal with questions related with the papyri recovered in the Villa; and two chapters discuss the reception of the Villa in the 18th century (when the building was first discovered and explored) and the 20th century. Two chapters on its real and on its virtual reconstruction conclude the contributions. The volume is the result of an Oxford conference held in 2007; all contributions are in English, with two chapters translated from the original Italian. Though the volume is clearly not aimed at a general audience, it is suitable for an informed readership from undergraduate level onwards. The blurb itself on the publisher’s website informs us that this volume is aimed at “Academics, Libraries, Institutes.” This is a noncommittal phrase. Nevertheless, the book is a welcome addition to the literature available on Herculaneum in general and the ‘Villa dei Papiri’ in particular.

The Papyrus Collection of the University of Michigan Library will host a two-week seminar in papyrus conservation, from Monday, June 18 to Friday, June 29, 2012, directed by Ms. Leyla Lau-Lamb. Participants will receive a hands-on introduction to papyrus conservation. They will learn about equipment and materials used in papyrus conservation and the theory and methodology behind current conservation techniques. They will then utilize these techniques to perform a range of treatment on actual papyri from the University of Michigan’s Papyrus Collection, including written documentation, digital photo-documentation, mechanical cleaning, damp treatments, reduction of folds, alignment of fibers, alignment of fragments, and methods of housing and storage.

The number of participants is limited to eight. Preference will be given to scholars and students who are directly involved with papyrus conservation, whether in the setting of a papyrus collection or archaeological excavations.

There is no course fee for the seminar, which is supported by the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection. Participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging and meals. Participants will have the option of purchasing the conservation tools they will use during the seminar. A certificate of participation will be provided at the end of the seminar.

Ms. Leyla Lau-Lamb is a senior conservator in the University of Michigan Library and has been conservator for the Michigan Papyrus Collection since 1990. Author of the Advanced Papyrological System (APIS) Guidelines for Conservation of Papyrus, she has been invited by various collections worldwide, including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Carlsberg Papyrus Collection of the University of Copenhagen, to assist in the conservation of papyrus.

Introduction

Trismegistos People is a tool dealing with personal names of non-royal individuals attested as living in Egypt in documentary texts between BC 800 and AD 800, including all languages and scripts written on any surface. Not included are pharaohs, emperors, and saints; people attested in texts outside Egypt (with the exception of some Prosopographia Ptolemaica entries) or people living outside Egypt (no consuls!); and names from non-documentary texts (e.g. narratives).

Trismegistos People consists of a complex set of prosopographical and onomastic databases. At the heart of the structure is the REF database, which lists attestations of people identified by personal names. It is linked to PER, a database of individuals, and to NAMVAR, a database of personal name variants which is in turn linked to NAM, a database of names. This is the first volume in a projected series of nine volumes dedicated to the classical epigraphy of Israel, a modern state with somewhat fluctuating borders that do not, however, correspond to either ancient Judaea or to Roman Palestine. The corpus's uniqueness, according to the brief introduction, resides in its multi-lingual aspect. Its chronological spectrum embraces nearly a millennium (c. 300 BCE to c. 640 CE), and the editors ought to be commended for attempting to break away from the traditional chronologies that have dominated the field of Jewish studies. Thus, instead of "Second Temple" and the "Mishnah" and "Talmud" eras (c. 450 BCE to 70 CE; c. 70 to c. 200 CE; and c. 200 to 400/600 CE, respectively), the editors have adopted the conventional classical boundaries of the "Hellenistic" period (which they do, however, terminate with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE); the "Roman Period" (from 70 to Constantine), and "Late Antiquity" (from Constantine to the Arab Conquest). The inscriptions themselves do not appear to lend support to these temporal divisions, at least not in part 1 of volume 1 which, according to page 39, solely covers "inscriptions from the Hellenistic period up to the destruction of the Second Temple." Perhaps, for the sake of clarification, this important piece of information should have been placed on the title page.

Arabic papyrology mostly deals with documents from Egypt and the East.
However, documents from Muslim Spain have their regional peculiarities
in paleography, terminology, diplomatics, etc. In this webclass, we will
focus on offical letters and agreements kept in the Barcelona "Archivo
General de la Corona de Aragón".

Die Bedeutung des Publius Septimius Geta liegt nicht in seiner Biographie, seiner »Karriere« zum Princeps oder einer mehr oder minder erfolgreichen Regentschaft begründet, sondern in den Folgen eines jahrelangen Bruderzwistes und eines etwa neunmonatigen, chaotischen Interregnums, an dessen Ende ihn sein Bruder Caracalla unter brutalen Umständen ermorden ließ. Denn daraufhin verhängte dieser jene Memoriastrafe über ihn, die gemäß der opinio communis als damnatio memoriaebezeichnet wird.

Die vorliegende Studie analysiert in eine ersten Abschnitt den Forschungsstand und die juristischen Grundlagen dieser typisch römischen Ausformung einer antiken Memoriastrafe und widmet sich dann in einem chronologischen Durchgang ausgewählten Einzelfällen, die eine Weiterentwicklung des Verfahrens erkennen lassen.

Getas damnatio memoriae, die in vielerlei Hinsicht exzeptionell für die römische Kaiserzeit und die Dynastie der Severer ist, steht im Mittelpunkt des systematischen zweiten Teils. Sie fußt auf einer intensiven Analyse des epigraphischen und papyrologischen Materials und wird exemplarisch zeigen, daß die »Vernichtung von Erinnerung« nicht unbedingt das Ziel der herrschenden Autoritäten war – sehr wohl aber der Eingriff in das kollektive Gedächtnis eines multiethnischen Vielvölkersstaates und die Befriedigung persönlicher Rachegelüste.

Der Autor

Florian Krüpe, Jahrgang 1973 studierte Alte Geschichte, Klassische Archäologie und Neuere Geschichte. Der Magisterarbeit über den römischen Kaiser als Leichenredner folgte als Promotion die vorliegende Studie. Die Römische Kaiserzeit mitsamt ihren zahlreichen Facetten gehört ebenso zu seinen Forschungsinteressen wie aktuelle EDV-Projekte in den Geschichtswissenschaften. Der Autor ist Akademischer Rat am Fachbereich Geschichte und Kulturwissenschaften der Philipps-Universität Marburg.

Weber has edited an excellent, well-written collection of essays investigating the Ptolemaic era, a collection (whose origins lie in 2007/2008) indicative of the advances made in the field since the 1980s when the imprecise term "multicultural" was first used to placate the “politically correct.” Weber’s introduction (pp. 9-29) makes clear that one is investigating cultural interactions, Kulturbegegnungen: a plural. The cultures and interactions are never static, nor is there a single Leitkultur. Weber proposes the investigation of five Problembereiche that cut across disciplines: a. the concept of monarchy, in which the desire for dynastic unity led to the adaptation of the Egyptian concept of sibling marriage; b. the elite of the land, Egyptian and Greco-Macedonian maintaining their respective positions, but prosopographical details preclude assigning ethnics based on one’s name; c. religion, in which the Ptolemies were active patrons, but a clear division between divine worlds seems to have persisted; d. the situation in the chora, illuminated for the most part by papyrus-preserved “personal” histories; e. dislike of the Ptolemaic rule: the priesthood saw the Ptolemies as the bulwark against a Sintflutof chaos and anarchy; it remains difficult to assign specific reasons for others’ dissatisfaction. Weber ends with advice (p. 24): “Generalisierende Aussage in grosser Stil ueber die griechische Elite oder die Aegypter verbieten sich daher.”

Livia Capponi, an enthusiastic and experienced papyrologist who is currently a lecturer in Ancient History at Newcastle University, has written a modest but well-documented introduction to Roman Egypt, a long historical period that begins with Augustus’ arrival at Alexandria on 1 October, 30 BC and ends with the Arab conquest of Egypt sealed by a treaty signed by the general ‘Amr ibn al-‘As and the patriarch Cyrus on 8 November 641. This introduction is intended for “students and teachers of Classical Civilization at late school and early university level”, according to the series’ mission statement on the back cover, even for “those with no previous knowledge of the classical languages and those who, before reading, did not even know what a papyrus was”, according to the author’s preface.

In the tradition of Calderini and Daris's Dizionario dei nomi geographici e topografici, this work offers a survey of all toponyms occurring in Demotic and Abnormal Hieratic texts from Egypt. For every toponym a basic identification and some bibliographical information is given, together with the references to all the texts (both documentary and literary) where the toponym occurs. For the moment 262 Abnormal Hieratic references are listed for 24 different places, and 12.672 Demotic references for 1098 different toponyms. For every attestation the name of the toponym is given as it occurs in the source, with a translation of its immediate context. To limit the number of pages, not all the available information has been copied in this printed volume, but further bibliography and additional remarks are accessible in the Trismegistos online database itself.
A great help compiling these data was the (unpublished) master dissertation of Katelijn Vandorpe, Egyptische geografische elementen in Griekse transcriptie [Egyptian geographical elements in Greek transcription] (1988), which is now also available as a pdf at http://www.trismegistos.org/top.php.

Textilien spielen zu allen Zeiten eine wichtige Rolle im sozialen und ökonomischen Gefüge von Gesellschaften. Einsichten in die kaiserzeitliche Textilproduktion erlauben vor allem ägyptische Papyri, die wie keine andere Quellengattung Auskunft über das Alltagsleben und das ökonomische Handeln von Individuen und Staat geben.
Ausgehend von einem formalistischen Ansatz wirft die Studie Wolle - Weber - Wirtschaft neues Licht auf die kaiserzeitliche Textilproduktion. Kerstin Droß-Knüpe kann mit dem Einsatz von modernen ökonomischen Begrifflichkeiten und Denkmodellen als heuristische Kategorien Zusammenhänge innerhalb der antiken Textilökonomie sichtbar zu machen, die bisher verborgen geblieben sind. Zudem stellt sie neben die Analyse der Papyri Erkenntnisse aus der (experimentellen) Archäologie, um in einer interdisziplinären Annäherung die Abläufe dieses Wirtschaftssektors sichtbar zu machen und letztlich das Verständnis der antiken Ökonomie als Ganzes zu vertiefen. Am gut dokumentierten Beispiel des römischen Ägypten werden so Modelle zur Funktionsweise der Textilproduktion entwickelt, deren Gültigkeit sich auch für anderen Gebiete des Imperium Romanum erwarten lässt.

Die zugehörigen 19 Archivtexte (P. Vet. Aelii) erstrecken sich über den Zeitraum vom Ende des 2. bis zur Mitte des 3. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. und werden teils in Erst-, teils in Neuedition vorgelegt. "You will marry your girlfriend, but you will be sorry." "You will inherit from your wife, but you will not be the sole heir." These are the words of an oracle attributed to Pythagoras which supposedly also helped Alexander gain world supremacy. The "Sortes Astrampsychi" were transmitted on papyri from the Roman period and medieval manuscripts in Greek. Consisting of 92 pre-formulated questions and 1030 matching answers from nearly all areas of daily life, the oracle represents an important source for the social history of Egypt, for example its demography, economy and jurisdiction. Even though the text of the ancient lot oracle known as Sortes Astrampsychi is not one of central concern to classical scholarship, it has had its share of attention in recent years. The Teubner edition of the shorter version by G. M. Browne appeared in 1983, and in 2001 R. Stewart’s Teubner text of the longer version (the so-called ‘ecdosis altera’) came out;1 both scholars also published a series of valuable articles on this document. Stewart’s English translation of the text appeared in W. Hansen (ed.), Anthology of Ancient Greek Popular Literature (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1998) 285-324. In 2006 an edition of the Greek text with a German translation was published by K. Brodersen, Astrampsychos: Das Pythagoras-Orakel (Darmstadt: Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft). And now we have the monumental and exhaustive study of the Sortes Astrampsychi by Franziska Naether, an immensely learned work that the author completed when she was only 29 years. The book is so densely packed with information on all possible aspects of the study of the Sortes Astrampsychi (and many related documents) that it is impossible to do justice to its contents in this short review. The book can best be characterized as a comprehensive contextualization of the Sortes Astrampsychi.

These are the oldest surviving poems written by the hand of a known poet. Dioscorus’s sixth-century manuscripts, with revisions and corrections, were discovered on papyrus in 1905 beneath the village of Kom Ashkaw, Egypt (ancient Aphrodito). The manuscripts are now held in museums and libraries around the world. Although Dioscorus was an Egyptian, he composed his poetry in Greek, the cultural language of the Byzantine Era. This critical edition begins with one of Dioscorus’s masterpieces: Hymn to St. Theodosius. Once considered obscure, its meaning becomes clear when seen through the lens of Byzantine spirituality.

Fifth International Society for Arabic Papyrology Conference, Carthage,
March 28-31, 2012

The fifth ISAP conference will be hosted by the Tunisian Academy of
Sciences, Letters and Arts, Beït Al-Hikma (/www.baitelhekma.nat.tn) in
Carthage. It will be organized by the International Society for Arabic
Papyrology in cooperation with the Institut français d’archéologie
orientale (Ifao) in Cairo.

The conference will start on the evening of Wednesday, March 28, and
continue through Saturday, March 31. The programme will include
20-minute lectures presenting text editions or studies based on
documentary material from the Islamic medieval world, workshops in which
unedited Arabic documents will be presented, and evening lectures. There
will also be the opportunity to visit the National Library of Tunisia
(Tunis) and the National Museum of Islamic Arts of Raqqada (Kairouan),
which hosts the only collection of Arabic payri in Tunisia, and
important early Islamic manuscripts written on parchment.

Participants are supposed to be or become members of the International
Society for Arabic Papyrology.

Summary

The fifth conference of the International Society for Arabic Papyrology
(ISAP) will take place at the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and
Arts, Beït Al-Hikma, in Carthage.

It will bring together scholars using documentary evidence to study the
history of the early Islamic world, including Arabic, Coptic, and Greek
papyri, paper and other documents, as well as epigraphic and numismatic
material. Participants may present their research either as 20-minute
papers or within the context of workshops on Greek, Coptic, and Arabic
papyrology and palaeography.

Conference Format

The Conference will include 1) text workshops and 2) sessions for the
presentation of 20-minute papers and 3) evening lectures at local
research institutes. Although the "official language" of the conference
is English, papers and workshops may be given in English, French,
German, or Arabic.

Text Workshops

These workshops will focus on a single text, or group of texts, to be
circulated in advance. The texts used may be in any of the languages of
the documentary sources relevant to the history of early Islamic Egypt
and the wider Mediterranean world (Greek, Coptic, or Arabic). A
translation of the text should also be circulated to allow for the
widest possible participation. The presenter will have the first thirty
minutes to introduce the text and its problems, and then the remaining
hour will be spent in discussion.

Paper Sessions

There will be several sessions during which three or four 20-minute
papers, followed by questions and discussion, will be read. While the
topics addressed need not focus exclusively on documentary evidence, it
is expected that documentary sources will be an integral and substantive
part of each paper.

Abstracts and Handouts

The deadline for 400-word abstracts is November 1 2011. Please send
abstracts to Sobhi Bouderbala (sbouderbala at ifao.egnet.net). If your
presentation will require audio-visual equipment of any kind, please
describe what is needed. Notification regarding the acceptance of
proposals will be made by the end of November 2011.

Also, please send a copy of all texts and translations to be used in the
text workshops by 15 February 2011. These will be made available to
participants.

Registration

There will be no conference fee charged. Participants who currently have
no membership should renew their membership in Carthage on the first day
of the conference. Payments have to be made in cash in Euros, dollars or
Tunisian dinars. If you are interested in joining ISAP, information can

An invaluable reference tool for Coptic Studies is The Coptic Encyclopedia (Aziz S. Atiya, ed. NY: Macmillan, 1991). This monumental work, with approximately 2800 entries written by 215 scholars, covers treasures of Coptic language and literature; Copto-Arabic literature; Coptic art, architecture, archaeology, history, music, liturgy, theology, spirituality, monasticism; and biblical, apocryphal, social, and legal texts. The encyclopedia was the fruit of years of effort on the part of its Editor-in-Chief, Aziz S. Atiya (1898-1988, Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Utah), and its Principal Investigator, Lola Atiya (1917-2002, Doctor of Humane Letters). Donations by the Coptic communities in the Diaspora, a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1979 to 1990, along with numerous other sources, made the project possible.

In 2009 the Claremont Graduate University (CGU) School of Religion acquired the right to develop an updated and continuously expanding and evolving web-based version of The Coptic Encyclopedia. Since then, the Claremont Coptic Encyclopedia (CCE) has been gradually posting the articles of the 1991 Coptic Encyclopedia and will be continuously adding updates and new topics from the growing body of scholarship in Coptic studies at worldwide institutions. Again, the participation of the Coptic community in envisioning and funding this project was instrumental in the project coming to fruition.
