The Oxyrhynchus Papyri LXXI (online preview)

Oxyrhynchus Papyri 71
edited by N Gonis

Not yet listed in Worldcat; "not yet availble" according to Oxbow Books, but images and cataloguing info are available at the Oxyrhynchus Online site.

Blurb from Oxbow Books:
This volume adds to previously published early Christian texts four new papyri of the Gospel of John and also includes fragments of a lost play by Sophocles (Epigonoi), two prose works on Hellenistic historians and Hellenistic kings, a rhetorical exercise on speeches in Thucydides, and a lost novel with an Ionian setting. A further group of papyri of Iliad and related Homeric texts, including a paraphrase of Iliad I (its texts transmitted verbatim by at least two other papyri), scholia minora to Iliad I, and commentaries on Odyssey III and XV with scholarly credentials. Documentary texts include declarations of livestock, loans, leases, and other contracts. Finally it records publication of a group of drawings that appeared outside the series but assigns Oxyrhynchus publication numbers to them for the first time. Images of the drawings were prepared for and will be published in the volume Oxyrhynchus A City and its Texts (GRM 93) and Egyptian Archaeology 22. 188p (Graeco-Roman Memoirs 91, Egypt Exploration Society 2007)

The second issue of Studi di Egittologia e di Papirologia. comprises 15 papers, some of which (marked *) were presented as abstracts at the XXIV International Congress of Papyrology in Helsinki.

In the first contribution, Francesca Angiò ("Il nuovo Posidippo" 9-32) examines the newest developments concerning P. Mil Vogli VIII 309 that appeared during 2004.1 This document is commonly attributed to Posidippus of Pela, and with this paper Angiò continues her contribution published in P. Lup 12 (2003) 7-68, with an accurate review that offers an overview of the principal problems.

The next paper, "A Coptic Letter from Two Women", by Roger Bagnall, Raffaella Cribiore and Timothy Renner, deals with P. Alex. inv. 675, probably from the 8th century, which is particularly badly preserved. It was first published by L. S. B. Mac Coull in Aegyptus 66 (1986) 190 ff. This article follows the approach taken by Bagnall and Cribiore in their Women's Letters from Ancient Egypt, 300 BC-AD 800 (Ann Arbor 2006, in press at that time), and offers a new text, translation and notes for P. Alex. inv. 675. The possible reference in l. 12 to Psalm 144.15 and to Psalm 109.1 or perhaps Corinthians 15.25 is really curious. The recipient of the letter, entitled 'papas,' was possibly a bishop, since this title -- as the authors point out -- was common for bishops in post-4th century Greek papyri (36).

Luciano Canfora The True History of the So-called Artemidorus Papyrus

Luciano Canfora
l libro

Papyrus Codex Tongeren

At the end of 2006 an extraordinary object was discovered in the Gallo-Roman Museum's collection in Tongeren, Belgium.

Though these finds were the result of excavation work carried out on the Broekberg in Tongeren back in the 1930s, they had never been thoroughly researched. Because it was discovered in a box of Roman finds, it was assumed that it, too, dated from that period.

At first glance it looked like a piece of tree-bark, but on closer examination it was realized that this could not be the case. The object most resembled a packet of papyri. This was highly unlikely though, as little or no papyrus had survived in Europe. And no letters were immediately identifiable either.

Professor Clarysse, Papyrologist at the K.U.Leuven (KUL) was called in and he immediately confirmed that it was an important discovery: a papyrus codex.

The virtual exhibition "Books of the Greco-Roman World"
For Odette Bouquiaux-Simon, former director of CEDOPAL, the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the University of Liege was the perfect occasion to organise an exhibition on ‘The World of Books in Classical Antiquity’ held in the general library’s Salle Marie Delcourt from 1 to 31 March 1993. Much of the exhibition is taken up here.

REVIEW of Tatiana Gammacurta, Papyrologica Scaenica

Reviewed by Francesca Schironi, Harvard University (schironi@fas.harvard.edu)
Word count: 2583 words

Table of Contents

The performative aspect of Greek literature is increasingly gaining the attention of classical scholars and rightly so, since most of Greek literature, at least until the fourth century BC, was produced primarily to be performed. This is even truer for Greek drama, which was linked closely with performance until much later. The volume by Gammacurta (henceforth G.) is intended to fill an important gap: studying papyri of dramatic texts which show traces of performative use. G. analyzes 23 papyri that span from the third century BC to the third century AD and that thus offer valuable documentation for the Hellenistic and especially Roman periods. The volume is divided into two parts. In the first part G. presents the papyrological evidence available, and in the second part she summarizes the data and draws her conclusions.
